Slippery Elm

Slippery elm

Slippery elm (also known as Ulmus rubra), is a tree native to the United States and Canada. In the past, Native Americans would use slippery elm as a remedy to treat common ailments, such as fevers, wounds, sore throats, and to keep meat from going bad.

What is slippery elm used for?

Slippery elm can be used to soothe a variety of symptoms. It is one of the safest herbs to give to dogs, with a plethora of benefits.

Gastrointestinal tract

Slippery elm has mucilage content which soothes, coats and lubricates the mucous membranes lining and digestive tract. It can be used to treat ulcers and other inflammatory bowel problems. As it’s high in fibre, it helps to normalise the intestines and can relieve symptoms of diarrhoea and constipation.

Relieving inflammation

Slippery elm can also be used to relieve inflammation of mucous membrane, being used to treat conditions of the kidneys, bladders, and joints (e.g., arthritis).

In case of cystitis

Slippery elm may be used to soothe bladder lining, making it beneficial for dogs suffering from cystitis. As it contains pentosans and is high in magnesium, it can be contraindicated in dogs who are at risk of an active infection.

For upper respiratory system

Just like how slippery elm reduces inflammation and lubricates the digestive tract, it can assist the upper respiratory system. For instance, slippery elm can help treat dogs in discomfort from painful coughs (i.e., bronchitis).

Slippery elm is one of the key ingredients in our pre/probiotic product, Tummy Tastic.
